‘I’m a positive thinking person, this will happen’: Aylesbury United chairman confident football club will return home

Aylesbury United’s chairman has said he is excited by potential plans to bring the club back to the town.

Graham Read said the club would take the process step by step but that he was sure that United would eventually return.

After Aylesbury Vale District Council agreed to hold talks with club officials, Mr Read said the campaign had never died.

“We are very excited. It’s never been off the agenda. The window of opportunity has come along.”

Despite previous failed attempts to bring United back to the town, Mr Read said he remained confident of success.

“I’m a positive thinking person, this will happen.”

United have been forced to groundshare in Leighton Buzzard and Chesham since being evicted from their stadium at Buckingham Road in 2006.

While manager Tony Joyce said he heard rumours of a mooted return to Buckingham Road, Mr Read feels that if the club is to move back to the town it will need to share its facilities. He said Aylesbury had a ‘superb paralplegic set-up’ but not a good reputation for general sporting facilities.

“The legacy of the Olympics has got us all thinking that we need to get up and do something.”

After the council’s recommendation, the campaign has taken off on Twitter, with the hashtag, #bringtheduckshome being championed by footballers such as Clarke Carlisle.
