HS2 boss considering calls to bury pylons in Wendover if line goes ahead
The boss of HS2 Ltd has confirmed she is looking into replacing overhead pylons in Wendover with underground ones.
It follows a letter from Aylesbury MP David Lidington asking if it was possible – in light of the fact that some existing pylons will have to be removed to make way for the high speed line.
In response Alison Munro, the chief executive of HS2 Ltd, wrote: “HS2 Ltd is currently working with the National Grid to establish the scope of the diversion required.
“We are working with National Grid to idenify a solution that will take into account both technical and environmental considerations.
“While I give no firm commitment at this stage, we will explore with National Grid if it would be feasible and cost effective to put the diverted lines underground.”
Mr Lidington wrote the letter to Ms Munro after September’s Wendover and Halton HS2 forum meeting.
The Europe minister made it clear that he ‘would never suggest electricity lines being placed underground is adequate compensation for the impact HS2 will have’ but ‘anything that could be done to improve constituents’ lives once HS2 in constructed should be considered’.
Last month anti-HS2 campaigner Roger Waller (pictured), of Dunsmore, near Wendover, who attended the meeting, said he did not expect pylons to be placed underground because of technical reasons such as the heat they would produce.
