Hospices help each other to cope with patient increase
Sue Varvel
As increasing numbers of people are forced to rely on the services of The Florence Nightingale and Iain Rennie hospices, the two charities have been highlighting the ways they now work together.
This includes joint staff training and organising combined fundraising events.
Speaking to mark the start of national Hospice Care Week, Iain Rennie’s Sue Varvel said: “We are all seeing an increase in the number of patients.
“For example in the first four months of this year we saw an 18% increase on last year which was 17% up on the year before.
“We are doubling our numbers year on year and we can’t keep up with that just working on our own.
“Partnership working is getting more and more common place because of the financial situation that the world is in.
“So joining up together makes a lot of sense, both in cost savings and you can combine your resources.
“Active partnerships are being encouraged across the health sector.”
Helen Pegrum, a consultant at the Aylesbury-based Florence Nightingale hospice, said: “The team are committed to collaborative working with Iain Rennie to ensure that each individual patient has access to the highest quality palliative care whatever their location.”
National Hospice Care week runs from October 8-14.
