Home schooling ‘a healthy option’, says Bucks pupil who aced A-levels and got into Cambridge aged 16

A wonderkid who has gained a place at Cambridge after taking his A-levels two years early thinks home schooling was a more ‘healthy’ way for him to be educated.

Richard Marshall was home schooled until the age of 14, when he joined the Sir Henry Floyd Grammar School and went on to achieve three A* grades at A-level.

He says the discussion-based nature of his home schooling was of real benefit, with most teaching conducted in a seminar style. He also praised the wider choice of what to study at GCSE level.

Mr Marshall, of Princes Risborough, said: “Being able to do things you find very interesting I think is really healthy.”

He also said the school system was more ‘isolating’, with students not interacting outside of their year group, and said pupils were much less willing to participate in class.

Mr Marshall said: “Going into school I could see people didn’t have the same drive to really engage with the teachers or get the most from them.”

But despite the culture shock, Mr Marshall said he enjoyed his school experience.

A Bucks County Council spokesman said: “The County Council recognises that parents have the right in law to educate their children at home and seeks to form positive working relationships with those that register with Buckinghamshire’s Elective Home Education Service.”
