Historic former pub on market for £1.5m

A historic Oxfordshire business has been put up for sale.

Offers in the region of £1.5 million are being invited by Savills for the Swan Antiques Centre and Restaurant in Tetsworth.

The Grade II* listed Elizabethan inn is set over three floors and comprises a 60 cover restaurant and the antiques centre.

The antiques centre is spread over the ground and two upper floors and is divided into around 40 rooms, with more than 80 English and French dealers selling goods there.

The full site is 1.165 acres and includes a garden with seating for 30 diners and parking for 60 cars.

Adam Bullas, an associate at Savills, said they expect a ‘good deal of interest’ in the site. He said: “This is a highly individual business opportunity with considerable period charm in a very attractive location. The Swan has a very good reputation and it is rare an opportunity like this comes to market.”

The Swan Inn was founded in the middle ages by the Thame monks renowned for their brewing exploits. It is rumoured Queen Elizabeth I stayed at The Swan during the 1580s. In the 1660’s Sir Charles Sedley, a courtier of Charles II, owned The Swan and changed its name to ‘The Sedley Arms’. It was extensively remodelled, adding the ballroom and providing a brick facade. In 1832 Queen Victoria visited the Swan and a post office was put in during the 1840s.

However, in 1988 the pub was closed and it was not until 1995 that it reopened in its current form.
