Hillbillies’ epic journey gives charity a timely boost
Haddenham Hillbillies
A group of Haddenham cyclists who successfully rode the width of the country have raised around £9,000 for the Chilterns MS Centre.
Martin Roberts and David Finch founded the Haddenham Hillbillies, a rustic collection of old, young, fit and not so fit cyclists from the village, and the group grew to 13 riders.
After training hard for the mammoth challenge, the Hillbillies set off at Whitehaven in Cumbria and made their way across to Robin Hood’s Bay, a 200-mile journey.
Their adventure was planned in April when Haddenham residents Mr Roberts and Andy Coles started planning the sponsored ride for the centre, where Mr Roberts’ sister, an MS sufferer, regularly receives treatment.
Aging between 30 and 59, the cyclists taking part began with varying levels of fitness.
But Mr Finch said they had been cycling every week in the Chilterns and had all managed to do 70 miles in one ride before setting off on the big day.
The riders took the Coast 2 Coast organised route, but deviated on the second and third days.
