Health chiefs announce inquiry into Jimmy Savile’s access and free rein at hospitals
The Department for Health has said it will hold an inquiry into the Jimmy Savile sex abuse scandal and how he was allowed free access to hospitals.
The inquiry will be conducted by the department itself and carried out by former barrister Kate Lampard, leading to fears it will not be truly independent.
There is a belief the sexual abuse was ignored due to the millions Savile raised for the hospitals.
Conservative Reading MP Rob Wilson has demanded Stoke Mandeville Hospital hold its own inquiry into why Savile was allowed to ‘roam’ the halls.
Mr Wilson said: “For the sake of the hospital’s reputation, I urge the trust not to drag its feet and act quickly. We now need openness and transparency, not the establishment closing ranks.
“Some significant questions need to be answered. Such as why did it allow Jimmy Savile just to roam the hospital at will? Was it just because he raised money? Was there concerns because the charity tap was about to turn off?”
Bucks Healthcare NHS Trust is currently helping Scotland Yard with its inquiries but has so far refused to say whether it will hold its own.
This contrasts the BBC which has already announced three separate inquiries and issued apologies.
