Grendon Prison inmate 'tried to eat paedophile's brain'
A JAILED psychopath desperately tried to crush the skull of a paedophile in a bid to eat his brain, jurors heard on Friday.
Psychiatrists said violent prisoner Lee Foye planned to brutally kill three of his fellow inmates, but gave up after being spotted savagely attacking Bob Coello.
Foye, 27, who denies murder, said he was carrying a spoon so he could eat Coello's brain, Luton Crown Court was told.
But despite repeatedly stamping and jumping on the 44-year-old's head, he was unable to break the victim's skull.
The pair were both inmates on G Wing at Grendon Prison at the time of the attack on August 1 last year.
Experts disagreed on whether Foye was in control of his actions.
Prosecution witness Dr Philip Joseph said Foye, already in jail for a serious violent offence, decided the night before the killing who his victims would be.
Dr Joseph said Foye had told him: “I made the decision on Saturday, I was going to kill.
“I thought a of a lot of people and narrowed it down to three.
“I was going to kill Bob first, and then the other two (who weren't sex offenders).”
Armed with a spoon, he went into Coello's cell, and held the paedophile in a headlock until he passed out.
He locked the door, and covered the narrow window with a piece of tissue paper.
Dr Joseph said: “He proceeded to stamp on his head with the intention of caving his skull in.
“He said blood was going everywhere, but the head wouldn't cave in.
“Although he had his spoon with him, he couldn't get into the head to eat the brain.”
After he was arrested, Foye complained he had wanted to tackle his increasingly violent thoughts when he came to Grendon, but received little help from staff.
Dr Joseph, who diagnosed severe psychopathic personality disorder, told the court: “He felt that if staff at Grendon had done their job properly, the killing wouldn't have happened, so they're partly to blame.”
And he added: “The officers told him as long as he didn't act on the thoughts, he'd be OK.”
Jurors were told that in April and May this year, Foye had cut off both his ears in Wood Hill Prison.
But Dr Joseph said: “He's self harming in a way to portray himself as mentally ill.”
Defence witness Dr Jonathan Shapero, forensic psychiatrist, who has dealt with Foye since October last year, said the accused had admitted the killing, and said he planned to target three inmates.
Dr Shapero described Foye as 'extremely complex', and said he had referred him for assessment at Rampton Secure Hospital in Nottinghamshire.
He said: “Whether he was mentally ill at the time of the killing is difficult to say.”
But the psychiatrist said the onset of mental illness could have been a factor in the killing.
He said although Foye intended to kill three, it became 'pointless' after fellow inmates heard the commotion.
