Greggs plan a welcome addition to Aylesbury High Street
A TOWN centre bakery has been given the green light for outdoor seating.
The plans at Greggs in Aylesbury town centre were given the go-ahead by Aylesbury Vale District Council’s planning committee, although the arrangement will leave just 1.7 metres worth of space for shoppers before they would be forced to walk into the semi-pedestrianised High Street carriageway.
UKIP Aylesbury Vale District councillor Chris Adams said he was worried that too many cars wrongly pass through the road – which could pose a threat to those on foot, should the space be further limited.
“Some vehicles come through the barriers when they shouldn’t, and I’ve even seen some lorries,” he said.
“I just think that it may be an accident waiting to happen.”
Members voted in favour of the plans however, stating the proposals could be of benefit to the town, bringing with it ‘vibrancy’ and a type of ‘cafe culture’.
Councillor Raj Khan said at the meeting he felt the application could help attract people into the town.
“I welcome this application for the town,” said the Liberal Democrat member.
“Something like this will encourage people to use the town more, and to feel like they’re a part of the town too.”
Concerns were however voiced by Conservative councillor Michael Rand, who said he was worried giving the go-ahead to such an application could set a precedent along the High Street.
“We do we go to all the trouble of pedestrianising these areas, if they’re only going to be taken up with chairs?” he said.
“And if we give Greggs permission to do this, will it then carry on all along?”
In answer to this however, Lib Dem councillor Corry Cashman simply replied: “If we give this the go-ahead, we have more of the same.
“I hope we do.”
There is however a disabled parking zone near to the bakery, which Lib Dem councillor Freda Roberts pointed out could prove problematic, were it too close to the seating.
However no objections were put forward by highways officers.
The plans were passed by a majority vote, and will now form part of a national roll out for Greggs bakeries.

Saturday, February 11, 2012 at 05:32 PMSilverdales - not just in the evenings, they are there during the day as well - damn near cause an accident when you come out of Kingsbury & have loads of vehicles parked there, you often cannot see what is coming around so have no idea if it's safe to overtake. Some time back we had an article whingeing about all the cctv cameras around the town - why don't all these cctv cameras pick up on illegal parking & direct traffic wardens there? Better still, direct a tow truck there. If they have to pay £100+ to get there car back, they might be more keen to use a car park.

Saturday, February 11, 2012 at 10:28 AMoooh I hope they're open late at night. I can pop in and buy a pie after the late night show at the theatre, after I've popped into the new estate agent and bought a home to go back to of course..... Loving the new Aylesbury.....

Friday, February 10, 2012 at 05:37 PMIn my view a pedestrian area should be just that... NO vehicles whatsoever, I have seen also some elderly disabled people drive far too fast past where Costa is etc and of course people are not expecting to see vehicles. Should be for loading say before 9am then no movement such as other towns. Another rubbish place is the cars that park illegally opposite the old KFC outside the Golden Bengal at the junction with Kingsbury and Buckingham St. God knows where all those people go but in the evening there are regular bottleneck queues back past Pizza Express... any Police around?...

Friday, February 10, 2012 at 03:17 PMTalking of applying law fairly - why is there a car always parked in the bus stop in the high street by the Vale park? Not only is it parked in a bus bay, it is also on yellow lines. And how about the wardens do something about the idiots (mostly taxis) who sit and wait on the double yellows outside iceland - especially when there is a bus at the stop outside the bingo. This just blocks the road completely. I have noted how much better the pedestrianised area is when PCSOs police the bollards by McDs. Railway Street (above QD) is also another popular place for people to dump their cars for a while. Come on AVDC, sort your act out & maybe start by reducing parking charges to 1p\minute charged in multiples of 10p?

Friday, February 10, 2012 at 01:16 PMAs one of the people left who still uses our town centre I would like to request that if we are going to clog up the pavement there is actually something done to police the pedestrian areas. The number of young and non disabled drivers using the High Street is ridiculous! So let's not worry about the couple of people a week that will be attracted to Aylesbury because of a couple of tables outside Gregs, instead let's see the law applied equally and fairly, and the abusers of the lack policing of road use in the High Street stopped!!

Thursday, February 9, 2012 at 07:57 PMHow about putting tables around the seats at the top of the market square? After all, they are only a dozen paces from Gregg's front door.

Thursday, February 9, 2012 at 11:12 AMThis is a joke right? So not only do people have to battle with the long queues due to slow customer service, they now have to battle past everyone sitting outside, whilst dodging people with pushchairs trying to get past without walking in the road, and avoiding getting hit by the boy racers that noone seems to do anything about! Aylesbury=Ridiculous, need to get out of this place!

Thursday, February 9, 2012 at 09:44 AMI think the straps on Raj Khan's straightjacket need loosening off a bit - the bloke is obviously in loco-land. If a bunch of pastry-munchers sat in the street is what's needed to "help attract people into the town" then gawd help us.

Wednesday, February 8, 2012 at 10:15 PMIf the thousands and thousands they poured into kingbury had no effect "bringing people into the town" I can't see a couple of tables and chairs making a difference. Slash parking charges for a start. The money lost would only have been spent on more stupid schemes like the badly designed footbridge, theatre subsidies and overspending on already expensive council offices.

Wednesday, February 8, 2012 at 08:12 PMDoes Super Raj really believe that having a couple of tables outside of Greggs will attract people to the town!!?? and even “feel like they are part of the town” did I miss something? Tables outside Greggs gives you a sense of belonging to the town!? I will look forward to the stench of cigarette smoke as I walk past that part of the high street, just like costa.
