Gran with a plan to get county’s firms mobile
Lesley Wells
A grandmother who has set up a website to help companies become mobile friendly is hoping her work can help shake off stereotypes.
Aylesbury resident Lesley Wells launched Apps4Bucks to help firms keep up with the fast-moving technological world.
But having experienced preconceptions towards her through years of working in IT, Ms Wells hopes people will realise older people can play an active role in the digital age.
Ms Wells, who currently works in the prison service teaching inmates IT, said: “Being a woman in IT was a difficult thing. That’s changed now but being an older person and female is still, in many people’s eyes, rather odd.
“There seems to be a myth that old people don’t know anything about computing. I’m not setting out to bust that myth but I think people need to be encouraged that there are plenty of older people in the business and we are not all afraid of technology.”
Ms Wells, who has four grandchildren, has been designing websites since people in the UK first started using them.
But when she injured her back and took time off work, Ms Wells began to look into the world of mobile phone apps and websites, and decided she could do something to help businesses embrace the new technology.
Using Apps4Bucks, firms already online can have a mobile version designed, and those that aren’t can have a full website created if they like, with updates easily brought in.
With people using their smartphones to browse the internet more and more, Ms Wells believes it is time for businesses to fully embrace the new age.
She said: “Just as 10 years ago if they had not got onto the internet they would have been left behind, it’s the same today. If they have not got a mobile presence and mobile website people are going to miss them because we are moving from doing things on PCs to doing them on our mobile phones.”
Ms Wells has been speaking to companies in the area, and many have realised they need to improve their mobile presence.
Aside from potential profits, the work is something the entrepreneur truly enjoy.
She said: “I love the design side. I’m a complete nerd and I always have been.”
