Free support for those hit by benefit cuts
Councillor Neil Blake
Residents affected by cuts to council tax and housing benefits will be offered free support and advice from the council.
Around 5,000 households in the Vale could see their council tax benefit reduced by between £130 and £300 per year from April, as part of government changes.
The decision follows drastic funding cuts from central government with Aylesbury Vale District Council’s tax benefit cut by one million pounds.
Cabinet member for resources, Neil Blake, said: “We recognise these changes could have a serious impact and we are here to offer support and advice. “People can call our benefits helpline and speak to our experts who can explain the changes and give budgeting advice. We’re also writing to everyone who currently receives council tax benefit to explain the new scheme and how they will be affected.”
Council tax benefit will be cut by 10% for people with a disability and 15% for those working or with young children. Everyone else will lose 20%.
However, there is £50,000 set aside to give additional help to people facing particularly challenging circumstances.
There will be also be a reduction in housing benefit for those of working age who are in social housing accommodation which is seen as too large for their needs.
