Devoted son takes on abseil challenge
A MAN from Aylesbury whose mum was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s seven years ago is set to complete the UK’s biggest abseil.
Tim Day, 30, will abseil 400 ft down Northamptonshire Lift Tower this Saturday in aid of The Alzheimer’s Society who, he says, have been a massive help to his family.
His mum Marion was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s after symptoms of memory loss began to surface when she was just 59.
“The diagnosis took quite a long time as, because of her age, the memory loss wasn’t really taken too seriously at first,” said Bucks County Council trading standards officer Tim.
“It’s been absolutely devastating – I didn’t really fully understand what the diagnosis meant at the time.
“My dad’s been fantastic with her, although it has been difficult.
“When my mum was diagnosed my dad took early retirement to become her full-time carer.
“It’s only since her recent deterioration that she’s now having to be cared for at Stoke Mandeville Hospital.
“The Alzheimer’s Society have been really great – they’ve helped my family, especially my dad, a lot. For example, when her health went downhill shortly before Christmas, they helped to get the ball rolling so that she could be looked after at Stoke Mandeville.
“I’m pretty terrified about it but I wanted to take on a big challenge to raise as much money and awareness as possible.”
