Dance fever hits Aylesbury!

Since shows like Strictly Come Dancing and Strictly Dance Fever have been showing on our TV's people have literally gone dance mad. The BBC show Dancing in the Streets was a testament to this last July when more than 80,000 people contributed to the record breaking dance class being held nationally.

If you haven't already found yourself thumbing the local directories looking for a dance club to join then look no further.

Ceroc, the UK's largest dance organisation, has opened a brand new weekly dance night in the Vale at Aylesbury Grammar School.

But what is Ceroc? Well, it's not ballroom and Latin and there definitely aren't any spandex and sequins!

Ceroc teach fun, sociable partner dance classes to people of all standards. In particular it's a hit with those who've never partner-danced before because there isn't any tricky footwork and it's danced to all genres of music from current chart toppers to oldies.

Aylesbury is the latest in a long line of international locations to be hit by this dance craze.

Jilly Clifford, 48, from Aston Clinton and franchisee for the new Aylesbury Ceroc night, says: "I was introduced to Ceroc 15 years ago by a girlfriend. At the time I was taking time off my work as a stunt double in the film industry to become a full time mum. It was refreshing to be able to go out for the evening and dance Ceroc and leave my mum duties at home.

"I was going twice a week, totally addicted from day one! I lost a lot of weight which I had put on after two babies, had more energy and made lots of new friends and gained a lot more confidence in myself. In 2002 I put my Ceroc passion into business and bought Cerocchilterns franchise and have enjoyed every minute of it."

Jilly adds: "The demand for social partner dance classes is phenomenal. Unless you've been to a Ceroc class you just wouldn't imagine that 80-150 people turn up every week to dance with each other. The dance is so easy to learn that just one regular weekly class can see you jiving around the floor with the rest within four-five weeks, and better still you don't need to bring a partner."

Amazingly, long-established Ceroc dance nights can see as many as 200-300 attendees in a class and members are all standards from complete beginner to advanced, so there's no need to feel shy or embarrassed.

If you want to give it a go the class starts at 7.30pm at Aylesbury Grammar School, Walton Road every Tuesday, led by teacher Louise Munn. There is no need to bring a partner and it's open to anyone over the age of 18.

Ceroc lowdown:

In the Second World War the American GI's took the jitterbug over to France. The French then added their sophistication to the dance giving it a more slinky and Latin look and referred to it as 'C'est le Roc'.

Ceroc was founded in 1982 by James Cronin who put together a core of 500 moves.

The dance is best described as a combination of salsa and swing dancing without the complicated footwork.

It can be danced to any music with a steady beat – fast or slow – and is quick and easy to learn.

You don't need a partner as the teaching method ensures everyone mixes together and participates.

Ceroc has half-million members nationwide with 70,000 active members through the doors every month.

There are over 166 Ceroc dance nights in operation all over the country with franchises in Australia, Dubai, Italy, France, Spain, Canada and the US.
