A SHAMED cricket club coach who sexually assaulted a teenager in his care has been jailed for 18 months.

Leslie Smith, 75, recruited the teenager to Wendover Cricket Club in the 1980s, and committed two sex assaults on him between 1985 and 1986.

On Monday, Aylesbury Crown Court heard the victim, now aged 43, had been devastated by the attacks, and had suffered a nervous breakdown as a result.

Before the two incidents – one of which happened on a train to Scotland, and the other which happened at Smith’s Wendover home after the victim had turned 16 – the youngster had been given alcohol and shown pornography by the coach.

Judge Johannah Cutts QC told Smith, who was marched from the dock in handcuffs: “You were much older than him, and you were in a position of trust, but you abused that trust.”

Det Sgt Joe Banfield, of the Child Abuse Investigation Unit based in Aylesbury, praised the victim for coming forward, and said: “Smith held a position of responsibility within the cricket club he was a part of, and the fact he abused this position to carry out these crimes is despicable.”

Smith, of South Street, Wenover, will have to sign on to the Sex Offenders’ Register for ten years and has been disqualified from working with children.

Smith joined the cricket club board in 1976, and founded the club’s youth section in 1977.

He was also chairman of the Buckinghamshire Cricket Association between 1983 and 1994.
