Council’s former town centre offices may one day become part of the town centre regeneration –but until then taxpayers forking out £193,000 a year to keep them open

The building at 66 High Street in Aylesbury houses the district council’s face to face service, used by those wishing to declare themselves homeless or ask about benefits.
HM Revenue and Customs also rents out part of the offices, paying an annual rent of £8,500 – but this is the only income generated by the building.
The remainder of council staff left the building for the new build on Gatehouse Road in April and the cash offices there closed on September 1.
Deputy chief executive at the council, Jon McGinty, says the council hopes to use the building in future, and does not wish to sell it in case a company ‘held the town centre to ransom’.
It also needs to retain a town centre service, and does not need to pay rent for the building as the council owns it, he says.
Mr McGinty said: “I have tried to see if anyone is interested in moving in, but I am unable to give them any length of tenure. I can only offer a year or two which isn’t enough.”
He added that were the council to move into a smaller premises, it would still have to pay business rates on the building, costing £102,500 per year, unless the High Street offices were demolished.
It has also claimed back £20,000 of business rates.
