Council chief accepts free tickets to Silverstone Formula One race

BUCKS County Council leader Martin Tett admits he agonised over whether to accept free tickets to the British Grand Prix at Silverstone.

With increased scrutiny over the conduct of politicians, Mr Tett wrote an open letter to the media explaining his decision to accept them. He said the invite was from the managing director of Silverstone and was non transferable.

“I have thought long and hard about this and have decided to accept this specific invitation,” he said.

“Silverstone is one of Buckinghamshire’s major employers, generating millions of pounds for Buckinghamshire’s economy, supporting local businesses and boosting tourism.

“The county council also plays a significant part in agreeing and delivering the traffic management plans to ensure visitors can enter and exit the circuit as quickly and efficiency as possible.”

He said that in accepting the tickets, he has made a separate donation to a local charity and the tickets will be declared in full accordance with official procedures.

Mr Tett was also offered tickets to the Olympics opening ceremony, but as these were transferable, he gave them to the council’s ticket giveaway competition, open to the public.
