Could M4 super hospital threaten the future of Stoke Mandeville Hospital?

Plans for a ‘super hospital’ near Slough could cut the number of patients attending Stoke Mandeville Hospital, says the MP who has put forward the plans.

Dr Phillip Lee, MP for Bracknell, is calling for a ‘Royal Thames Valley Hospital’ to be built at Junction 8/9 of the M4 motorway.

This, he says, would be used by patients in South Bucks who currently use the services of Stoke Mandeville.

However, while this would drive down patient numbers, it could also impact Stoke Mandeville’s funding as it currently relies on thousands of patients from the Wycombe area.

In response to the plans, a spokesman for the Bucks Healthcare NHS Trust, said: “We believe that Buckinghamshire should have a strong, independent hospital available within the county – and we are confident that we can offer this through the network of services we provide across Wycombe, Stoke Mandeville and our other hospital sites.

“We also continue to work with other health colleagues in and around the county to develop partnership working in order to improve patient quality and experience.”

More on this as we get it.
