Closed pub faces the bulldozers as house plans are submitted

The Red Lion in Haddenham closed in April

The Red Lion in Haddenham closed in April

A village pub which closed suddenly earlier this year could be demolished to make way for new houses.

A planning application has been submitted to knock down the Red Lion in Haddenham and build three detached houses with parking.

Villagers have been hoping someone would come in to restore the pub to its former glory, but no-one has been forthcoming as yet.

When the Red Lion closed in April it was described as ‘a big loss’, with village butcher Simon Parminter saying: “A big bit of history has gone out of the village.”

The closure came as a surprise to everyone in Haddenham, with the final night of business followed by an unexpected closure the following day.

Councillor Margaret Aston, Haddenham parish council chairman, said she was not aware of anyone coming in to reopen the building as a pub.

She said: “The village would like to see it return.

“It’s a catch-22 situation. You’ve got to find someone who will have to be able to set it up as a restaurant more than a pub.

“It’s up to somebody who feels they can do that.”

Previous applications to build on the site have been strongly opposed by villagers.

A decision is due to be taken on the plans by Aylesbury Vale District Council by December 3.
