Clerk quits weeks into job to leave authority in turmoil
A parish council has been left in turmoil after losing its second clerk in a year and less than a month after the last one was appointed.
Jill Bottomley resigned just weeks after taking on the role at Wendover Parish Council, blaming the heavy workload.
She took up the post on a temporary basis following the previous clerk’s departure last year, before being officially appointed.
In a letter to council chairman Bob Duggan, she said: “The workload is extremely demanding and my limited experience as a parish and town clerk makes that even more difficult to manage.”
Ms Bottomley’s predecessor, Fiona Lippmann, left in controversial circumstances, taking to the council to an employment tribunal with a claim of constructive unfair dismissal. This claim was dismissed by the tribunal in October 2012.
Mr Duggan said the council is taking steps to find a new clerk but it was not an ideal situation to be faced with again. He said: “To lose one is unfortunate, to lose two is careless.
“She stuck through thick and thin and then decided there were other opportunities open to her.”
The council has been under pressure to organise and find funding solutions to cope with the upcoming RAF Freedom Parade in Wendover, but Mr Duggan denied the resulting pressure was a cause for her resignation.
Ms Bottomley worked for the council in a variety of roles for three years and Mr Duggan said they were disappointed to lose her.
He said: “We are very sad to see her go. Her work has been second to none and she’s been a good clerk and employee.”
It is expected a new appointment will be made in two to three months.
