'Charity Bob' will be remembered forever

BHTV attended a memorial celebration for one of the Vale's best-loved fundraisers Bob Green this week.

'Charity Bob' as he was so famously known, will be permanently remembered thanks to a new picture montage that has been ceremoniously placed on the wall of the Five Bells Pub in Weston Turville this week.

Bob Green MBE was the Weston Turville resident and regular at the Five Bells who raised 150,000 over the years for various charities.

September 11 marked the year since his death, and although he is still sorely missed by the whole community, this new memorial in the pub aims to keep his hard work, fresh in everyone's minds.

The opening ceremony on Tuesday also saw the presentation of a 1,500 cheque to three different local charities, all receiving 500 each.

Landlady, Sharon Busby, along with Bob's family organised his fundraising work to be carried on so that the on-going collection throughout the year could be presented to the chosen charities, on the anniversary of Bob's death.

The charities were selected on the basis that they were local, and had some connection to the community. The Thames Valley and Chiltern Air Ambulance was one of the recipients, along with the Alzheimers Society and the MS Society.

The Air Ambulance Area Fundraiser, Carl Undery said: "This is fantastic. We supply a big life saving service for the community and this is a nice way for the community to help us in return."

Sharon Busby has been holding collections and raffles in the pub, in an effort to carry on the good work. One way the bar staff manage to generate money for their charities is to charge a 1 fee for any customer who sits in Bob's bar stool.

BHTV spoke to Sharon and one of Bob's sons Kevin as they reflected on the much-loved Mr Green's remarkable life.
