Census shows Aylesbury Vale population has grown less than its neighbours

The population of Aylesbury Vale has increased less over the past 10 years than many surrounding regions and the national average.

Between 2001 and 2011, the number of people living in the Vale went up from 165,900 to 174,100, a rise of 4.9%.

However, across the South East there was a population increase of 8% during the same period, and one of 7.1% across England and Wales, according to census figures from the Office of National Statistics.

Neighbouring areas also saw more significant increases, with South Bucks going up 8.1%, Wycombe 5.9% and Milton Keynes 17%, the largest growth in the South East.

But the Vale’s population rose by more than in the Chiltern region, where there was only 3.8% growth.

However, with the possibility of 9,000 new homes being built in the Vale in the future, on top of 7,000 already approved, the district’s figures could change drastically before the next census.

The Vale is within 1% of the average population for each age group, apart from 20 to 24 year olds, for which there are 1.8% fewer than average, and 25 to 29 year olds, which the region has 1.2% less than the England and Wales average.

According to the census, 14.9% of people living in the Vale are aged 65 and over, compared with 16.4% across England and Wales. In 2001 12.8% of the area’s population was in this age range.

The figures also show there are still more women than men in the region, with 87,900 of the former and 86,200 of the latter. In 2001 there were 82,309 men and 83,439 women living in Aylesbury Vale.
