CARPHONE Warehouse is offering a £1,000 reward for information after thieves stole 40 smartphones – and made off with them on bicycles.

The men, both wearing scarves over their faces, threatened a member of staff at the shop in Aylesbury Retail Park, Cambridge Street, on Friday at around 6pm.

They forced the employee to hand over cash from the safe and also stole 40 phones, which were still in their boxes. Most of the mobiles stolen were iPhones but also included BlackBerrys and HTCs.

Detective Constable Natalie Golding said: “This was a nasty experience for the shop worker, thankfully he wasn’t hurt but was shocked.”

The offenders are both described as white, around five feet nine inches and possibly aged in their teens. One had a black-and-white striped scarf covering the lower part of his face, the other had a black scarf covering his mouth.

Both wore black hoodies pulled tight around their heads and gloves. They fled from the scene on what appeared to be black BMX-style bikes.

Detective Constable Golding said: “The two offenders would have made off on bikes with a lot of boxes, so we would urge anyone who saw anything suspicious in the Cambridge Street area at around this time to contact us.”

She is also keen to trace the movements of the two men before and after the robbery – and hear from anyone who is offered a reduced-priced smartphone in a pub or other unusual setting.

After the robbery, Carphone Warehouse offered a £1,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of those responsible.

A spokesman for the company said: “The safety and well being of our employees is always our top priority and thankfully none of our team members were injured.”
