The plans to build an incinerator at Calvert in 2015 remain on course despite fierce opposition.

At a six hour Bucks County Council meeting, a 50-page representation from a group of council taxpayers was heard regarding what they believed to be unnecessary costs.

Lesley Clarke, chairman of overview and scrutiny committee, said: “Today’s proceedings have been as detailed and comprehensive as any I have seen since taking up this role.

“The committee does not find that there is any reason to refer the decision back to cabinet or to full council.”

Permission for the site was originally given in April and the council decided by a majority vote to back the plans.

A spokesman for the concerned council taxpayers, Christopher Prideaux, said: “The council keeps quoting a 30 year nominal saving of £150 million but in real terms it is less than £1 million per year and not justified by the long term risk being taken with over £200 million of council taxpayers’ money.”

Mrs Clarke added: “It is clear to this committee that the programme is robust and represents value for money.”

Around 300 construction jobs and 64 permanent jobs are expected to be created.
