Businesses urged to join success story

THE head teacher of the improving Quarrendon School wants businesses to play a part in its continuing success.

As part of the rebranding of the school a giant jigsaw puzzle is being compiled in the school hall.

Each jigsaw piece will be dedicated to an individual or organisation who has already played a part in getting the school out of special measures, but head teacher Jonathan Johnson is inviting people to join them. He wants the school to become the hub of the community.

He said: "We feel we have a lot to offer the business community in facilities. What I would like to see the school become is something for the community. If you want to teach your staff Microsoft Excel think about us first. We have staff here who can teach it."

They have been investing money into the school building to help it cater for even bigger events, such as day conferences. Mr Johnson continued: "The idea is that the refurbished classrooms become syndicate rooms and then because we are working to transform the canteen, food facilities are available. You could have a whole conference here."

He said before he joined in January last year, Pizza Hut used the school's facilities for training. "Whatever our facilities were back then, Pizza Hut felt they could use them. Now they are a lot better and we can provide a wider range of facilities.

"I can understand it's not your first port of call. We want to be the hub of the community and it's about providing a service to meet the needs of the wider community."

After an Ofsted report in November, the school saw Mr Johnson had kept his promise to get the school out of special measures by Christmas. He joined them with ten years' experience working in schools like Quarrendon.

He wants the whole community to be part of that and make the jigsaw puzzle grow. He said: "My question to local businesses 'Do you want to be a piece of the jigsaw?'"
