Burning ambition to keep Paralympic flame ceremony in town
Paralympic Flame Festival at Stoke Mandeville Stadium
A campaign is under way calling for the Paralaympic flame to be lit every four years at Stoke Mandeville Stadium.
It follows the success of last week’s events in the Vale, where a global TV audience watched the Paralympic flame being forged at the birthplace of the Games and thousands turned out to watch a video and pyrotechnic display in Market Square.
Currently the Paralympc flame is forged in the country hosting the Games, unlike the Olympic flame which is always created on Mount Olympus in Greece.
Aylesbury North county councillor Mary Baldwin is spearheading calls for the Paralympic flame to be lit at its spiritual home before each Games. She said: “I want as many people as possible to support the idea. How magical it would be if we could have a celebration like that in Aylesbury every four years.”
“The atmosphere was amazing. Everyone was enjoying it and I was proud of Aylesbury and proud to be a part of it.” Before the Games started the International Paralympic Committee confirmed it would be considering the idea after London 2012.
Ian Barham, 2012 Games manager for Bucks, said: “We very much hope that after the Paralympic Games the IPC would consider honouring Stoke Mandeville in such a way in an ongoing basis.”
