Bucks school is first in country to get lifesaving heart unit
Gateway School nurse Claire Nurse with pupils and the defibrilator
A Bucks school has become the first in the country to install a unique lifesaving defibrillator device.
The move could increase the survival rate of pupils and teachers suffering a cardiac arrest while at the Gateway School by up to 90%.
The defibrillator provides voice-led instructions to the user, meaning anyone, trained or not, can use it to save a life.
The moment the device at the Great Missenden school is lifted from its case it automatically connects to a help desk operator via a hands-free speaker.
The ambulance service is also alerted with a GPS reference of the incident.
Headteacher Steven Wade said: “We can have high numbers of people in the school at any one time and we have a duty of care to each and every one.
“This will ensure that crucial life support can be administered in the case of a cardiac arrest, whether this is in the school, on the sports field, playground or at any point on the walk to and from school.
“We hope also to extend the use of the defibrillator to the wider community in Great Missenden, if someone was to suffer a cardiac arrest close by to the school.”
