'Bring your gas masks' urge protest march team

AS strength of feeling continues to grow against waste plans issued by Bucks County Council, a group of campaigners will be holding a protest next week in Aylesbury town centre.

Aylesbury and Chilterns Resistance to Incinerator Development (ACRID) campaigners will be holding the demonstration outside the county offices in Walton Street next Tuesday in a bid to make their voices heard against proposals for an energy from waste incinerator being built near Aston Clinton.

A petition that has been signed by thousands of people is expected to be handed over to Martin Tett, cabinet member for strategic planning, at the event which organisers hope will attract between 500 and 1,000 people.

On the ACRID website, people who want to attend the protest are being asked to wear ACRID t-shirts, a gas mask, face mask or safety goggles and bring a bunch of dead flowers to help emphasise their campaign.

Nigel Hayward, chairman of Acrid, said: “We are inviting anybody who wants to, to come along and join us.

“The anger of the majority of the population that is being felt is quite amazing, so they need to make themselves seen before it’s too late because BCC will be making its recommendations soon.

“We have distributed more than 15,000 leaflets and 1,200 people turned out at a meeting held at the weekend to find out more and for help with filling out forms. We are having ongoing discussions with MP David Lidington, who has been invited to the protest.”

David Carroll, lead spokesman for waste at BCC, said: “We welcome residents’ opinions and views on the waste development plan and are happy to talk to the group about their concerns. It must be emphasised that this matter is currently at the very early stages of consultation, and any decisions are far from final.

“The waste development plan offers Energy from Waste as an option for this site but should a waste contractor make a planning application to build an EfW plant it would be subject to wide consultation and would have to adhere to strict planning and environmental/health conditions.”
