‘Bring the flame home’: Proposal for Stoke Mandeville Paralympic flame lighting ceremony before every Games agreed by county council
The Paralympic flame is forged at Stoke Mandeville Stadium
A motion to light the Paralympic flame at Stoke Mandeville Stadium before every Summer and Winter Games has been unanimously agreed by Bucks County Council.
On Thursday county councillors passed the proposal backing a regular lighting ceremony at the Paralympics’ birthplace.
The council will now ask the Government and Paralympic authorities to support the plan.
It comes after a successful lighting ceremony at Stoke Mandeville Stadium and celebration event in Aylesbury’s Market Square last month before the London Paralympic Games.
Council ambitions to have the flame lit at Stoke Mandeville before every Games were first revealed in the Bucks Herald in June.
Councillor Mary Baldwin, one of those who proposed the motion, said it was about legacy and ensuring ‘equality’ between the Olympics and Paralympics.
She said: “Bring the flame home.”
Before voting on the motion, the work of Dr Ludwig Guttmann was praised.
