BREAKING NEWS: Sainsbury’s to create 300 jobs with new supermarket in Gatehouse Road while revamping Aylesbury town centre store (and art deco Odeon is set to become retirement flats)
Sainsbury's Gatehouse plans
Retail giant Sainsbury’s has today confirmed plans for a massive superstore in Gatehouse Road.
The 70,000 sq ft store, to be situated on the corner of Bicester Road and Gatehouse Road, will offer the full range of Sainsbury’s food items, hot food counters, clothing and a customer restaurant.
The site will also provide around 500 car parking spaces, and in order to ensure as little disruptions as possible to the neighbouring roads, Sainsbury’s says it plans to widen Gatehouse Road outside the site.
The firm has, however, said it does not anticipate a great deal more traffic will be attracted as a result of the store, as its intention is to create more choice for those already shopping in town.
Sainsbury’s also hopes to revamp its Buckingham Street store, while regenerating parts of Cambridge Street and New Street, building new retail units and retirement apartments.
It is hoped the new town centre supermarket will have new frontages, improved lighting and new signage, making its Buckingham Street presence more attractive. There will also be a revamp of the store’s car park.
These improvements will also see the demolition of all the redundant and vacant buildings on the site, including the old Odeon cinema and empty offices on Cambridge Street and New Street.
As part of the town centre regeneration, Sainsbury’s has teamed up with Churchill Retirement Living to provide 50 new retirement apartments on the corner of the two streets, beneath which there will be new shopping units for rent.
There will also be 15 new ‘affordable’ apartments on New Street and Cambridge Place, with dedicated off-street parking.
The area behind Sainsbury’s and the back of the store will also be revamped, including the installation of a new footpath and tree planting between the new shop and New Street.
These proposals are to be put to Aylesbury Vale District Council after Sainsbury’s has carried out a period of consultation, with interactive exhibitions soon to be held with the public displaying plans.
These are to take place on September 14 from 4-7pm in the Olympic Room at Aylesbury Vale District Council’s offices in Gatehouse Road, and on September 15 from 10am-2pm in the car park of the Buckingham Street Sainsbury’s store.
A new website will be launched this afternoon displaying the plans, and giving an online opportunity for public feedback. Visit www.sainsburys-aylesbury.co.uk
