Benefits cheat who had more than £100,000 in savings given 300 hours community service

A benefits cheat who stole more than £11,000 from the taxpayer has been given 300 hours community service.
Abdul Wahid, of Eskdale Road, Stoke Mandeville, admitted failing to declare his true financial circumstances and making a false statement.
He was investigated by Aylesbury Vale District Council’s fraud investigation team for failing to declare more than £100,000 he had in savings.
Benefit is not paid when someone holds more than £16,000 in savings.
By failing to declare all his savings, Wahid fraudulently obtained £9,665 in housing benefit and £1,507 in council tax benefit from May 2010 to December 2011.
He is required to repay all the overpaid benefits and also £600 prosecution costs.
Councillor Neil Blake, cabinet member for resources, said: “We are committed to ensuring that everyone who is entitled to benefits receives them. However, we will take action against anyone found to have deliberately withheld information which is relevant to their claim and will continue to ensure the full level of any fraud is brought before the courts.
“If you are worried about your claim, please contact our benefits team as soon as possible, so they can help to make sure you are getting the right amount.”
