Aylesbury’s right behind ‘cheeky’ Cooray as he prepares for Olympic marathon showdown

While British eyes have focussed on the likes of Jessica Ennis during the Olympics, Aylesbury’s attention will be on marathon runner and Greggs worker Anuradha Cooray this Sunday.

Sri Lankan, Anuradha Cooray, is to run in the Olympic marathon and for the people he works with it has come as quite a shock.

His manager at Greggs in Aylesbury town centre, Beckie Clinch, 32 said: “We knew he ran.

“He runs to work and back but we just thought it was a bit of a hobby.

“We didn’t know how serious he was until we found out he was competing in the London marathon a couple weeks before it.”

As previously revealed by The Bucks Herald, the Vale of Aylesbury Athletics star makes the gruelling 17 mile run from his home in High Wycombe to work at the bakery every day.

In what he deems a ‘home Olympics’ the Sri Lankan has met stars such as Jamaican and American sprinting legends, Asafa Powell and Tyson Gay respectively during his time in the Olympic Village.

Beckie added: “I spoke to him this afternoon on the phone and he was like ‘I’ve seen this person and this person’.”

Ms Clinch added: “We are looking forward to having him back and having him around us.

“He’s one of those people you look quite forward to working with.

“He’s so cheeky and he’s always got something to say.”

Unfortunately, for the Greggs manager she will not be able to catch the race as she has to work but she said she will definitely be recording it.

However, the manager did say she knows the rest of the staff will be watching.

“I know he’s hoping to beat his time from the London marathon.

“We are all right behind him and we can’t wait to have him back. All the customers keep asking about him.”

The Olympic marathon begins at 11am on Sunday.
