Aylesbury benefits cheat fraudulently claimed more than £22,000

An Aylesbury benefits cheat who claimed more than £22,000 while being financially supported by a partner has been given a suspended prison sentence.

Charlotte Thorp, of Prothero Close, pleaded guilty to charges and was given a 12-week jail term, suspended for a year.

Between June 2009 and July 2012, Thorp was overpaid income support of £10,712, housing benefit of £9,094 and council tax benefit of £2,668.

Aylesbury Magistrates Court heard how Thorp claimed benefits from Aylesbury Vale District Council and the Department for Work and Pensions as a single person. An investigation found she had failed to declare she was living with a partner who was supporting her financially.

Thorp was given a three-month curfew from 7pm to 7am on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. She must also pay £85 in legal costs and pay back the overpaid benefits.

Councillor Neil Blake, cabinet member for resources, said: “Together AVDC, partner organisations and residents can help fight what is quite simply the theft of public funds.

“We invite residents to contact us if they suspect benefit fraud. I would also strongly advise anyone who has received overpayments to contact us as soon as possible so that the issue can be resolved.”
