'Join us as we fight for electoral reform'

The chairman of Buckingham Lib Dems is urging people to make their voices heard regarding the voting anomaly in the constituency due to John Bercow being Speaker.

It is good to see that John Bercow is keeping up the pressure on the House of Commons select committee on procedure to inquire into how to re-enfranchise the voters of the Speaker's constituency – currently Buckingham.

We have been doing all we can to encourage LibDem MPs and our party generally to press for the creation of an honorary seat for the Speaker.

A by-election would then be held in their original constituency to allow electors to vote for the party of their choice, rather than for a selection of minority party candidates.

Buckingham LibDems have submitted a motion for debate at our federal conference in the autumn, on the same subject.

Our website has details of the petition we are currently inviting people to sign to make their views known.

We have invited the local Conservative and Labour parties to join us in promoting this petition in a non-partisan way; and we look forward to a positive response from them both soon.

There is also a Facebook group created by Graham Lee, where electors can make their views known on this important issue – www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=118598158159917&v=wall.

We would welcome indications of support to strengthen our case to the powers that be.

Ian Metherell

Chairman, Buckingham Liberal Democrats
