Is Bucks County Council wasting our cash?
That's the question being asked by a correspondent this week.
The front page of last week's Bucks Herald announced "10m cuts" by Buckinghamshire County Council – further extensive reporting was carried on page 3 about likely "swingeing" cuts in front-line services.
However, Page 3 also noted that "(county] councillors have undergone training on how to deliver bad news about cutbacks".
Furthermore, page 15 reports that "six members of BCC are to take part in a contest inspired by a TV reality show – 'I'm a councillor, get me out of here' aims to get councillors and youngsters talking".
One councillor will be voted to be "youth champion". Apparently, this is not the first time this "initiative" has been undertaken.
How can these activities be justified? Are they the best use of councillors' time (and presumably some officers' time, too)?
How much are they costing? Are there any more like these? BCC clearly needs to examine all its internal activities, as these examples are clearly areas where money can be saved without any detrimental effects at all.
