Horse lover warned the RSPCA

A furious horse-lover from Wendover who warned the RSPCA about the alleged ill-treatment of animals at Spindles Farm near Amersham two years ago has spoken to The Bucks Herald.

Kay Thomson, who looks after deprived horses as a hobby, bought a 12-month-old colt which had been kept at the farm in March 2006 for 500.

The horse, which she named Romany Ryan, had muscle and tissue wastage on its hind quarters, was full of lice and had lost its appetite.

"I phoned the RSPCA to tell them about the state of this horse, but all they said was if I was not prepared to hand him over to them there was nothing they could do about it," she said.

"I rang the main hotline five times to warn them but all they said was they would hand the information on to one of their inspectors."

Mrs Thomson, 40, said she felt incredibly angry and bitter when news broke about the state of scores of horses at Spindles Farm last week.

"I was gobsmacked," she said. "I was watching the RSPCA on telly saying what a sickening scene it was, but they could have stopped it so much sooner. I was not the only one who warned them.

Romany Ryan has since recovered and is now settled with a friend of Mrs Thomson's, who does a lot of dressage with him.

"It was all about tender loving care," she said.

"It was literally around the clock, I had to get his trust first before I could do anything. But he was a super horse after a couple of months work."

A spokeswoman for the RSPCA said: "The owner was known to us, however we regret that while we are gathering evidence for a potential prosecution we are not able to comment further on specific concerns or allegations as this could prejudice any legal proceedings."
