Hair raising competition boosts air ambulance
THE Thames Valley and Chiltern Air Ambulance is set for a cash boost of more than £1,000 and it's all thanks to 15 men, two weeks and a whole lot of facial hair.
Lifelong Granborough resident and the unofficial Mayor of the village, Karl McWhirter, was joined by a host of other men from the same village and also North Marston and Steeple Claydon, to take part in a charity beard growing competition.
The competition was literally hair raising, but it was also money raising with a cheque for more than 1,000 set to be handed over to the air ambulance when all the sponsorship money has been collected in. Mr McWhirter said he had chosen the air ambulance as the beneficiaries due to the village's relatively remote location.
"In our village, and where it is - with lots of fields around it - is important to have the air ambulance available to us and that is why we chose it. I have to say a big thank you to everyone for putting their hands in their pockets in what is a dodgy time, financially for everyone.
"We raised a wonderful amount of money and obviously we had some giggles along the way seeing people who have never had beards or even facial hair, letting it grow for the two weeks.
"Some were itching to shave it off after just a week but we said they would be fined! But they were all good sports and it was great fun," he said.
Mr McWhirter said a special thanks to Les and Barbara who sat as judges for the competition where key factors such as colour and length were considered before the top three were chosen. In first place was Dean Bunyan while James Tattam and Malcolm Newman were second and third respectively.
