A sell-out night commemorating David Bowie’s appearances at Aylesbury’s Friars club was a great success.
A panel of speakers made up of Bowie’s webmaster Mark Adams, co-promoter of the Friars Watford and Dunstable gigs Malcolm Isbister, Friars founder Robin Pike, Aylesbury legend Kris Needs, singer/songwriter Les Payne and the Friars Webmaster Mike O’Connor told their stories about working with the great man.
The evening was chaired by Friars promoter David Stopps.
One of the many high points was when Les Payne played a demo that he had received from Bowie in 1971 of ‘Star’ which Les subsequently recorded with his Princes Risborough based band Chameleon.
When Bowie first played Friars in September 1971 Budget Stopps reminded him of the song.
He had forgotten about it and later recorded the song himself and included it on his iconic Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars album.
