Fed up with constant sniping of Aylesbury
Our correspondent says there are many positives about Aylesbury and people should stop moaning so much about the town.
My wife and I, both Aylesburians, are getting rather fed up with the continuing sniping of Aylesbury and would like to redress the balance and highlight some of the positives we have in our town.
It is some 50 years since the population exploded when we took a vast number of London 'overspill'.
The doubling of the population in such a short time obviously had a dramatic effect on the town and its superstructure.
What have we now:
The Market Square, once used as a car park, is now a thriving daily market, adding vibrancy and colour to the town centre.
The Friars Square shopping centre - light, airy, and a joy to shop, although we did mourn the recent demise of the fountain.
This morning I visited Aylesbury Aqua.
I learned to swim in the old Vale pool, open air and unheated! Free swimming has brought me back and although I shall have to pay next week, the facilities are wonderful.
As I left this morning I passed a line of buggies - what joy to see the young mums and their children enjoying the water.
Why oh why are some many against the new theatre?
Aylesbury used to have a theatre - Market Theatre.
My wife and I regularly go to Milton Keynes which is in the same Ambassadors Theatre Group.
This week we saw Quartet - we are still talking about it, funny and poignant.
MK is the busiest of all regional theatres in the group.
The productions, many pre or post West End, are as varied as you could wish for.
Recently we have seen ballet; musicals, opera, comedy and drama - all first class productions and for much less than the West End prices without the cost and time of traveling to London.
With Swan Lake to open the first season (we are looking forward to the first night) and with two blockbusting musicals in Evita and Joseph both of which we have seen and recommend; the Aylesbury public are in for a treat.
It was obvious that ATG would put on 'big' shows to start with, but these will be followed by the smaller drama and comedy productions.
Of course not everything is rosy, it never will be, but with a positive attitude from everyone including our local media we can once again be proud of our County town.
