Westcott, January 30

PARISH COUNCIL MEETING, January 15 - clerk's report. the village road has at last been repaired after damage caused by lorries lifting the tar in the hot weather of July 2006.

The Two Chestnut Trees at the Whitchurch Close junction have been professionally inspected and found to have bleeding canker disease. Although not immedietely dangerous, they will have to be removed, probably in the autumn.

Play Area suppliers have given presentations to the council and one has been selected to develop proposals. It is hoped to make the improvements in the spring.

The Village Newsletter should have been delivered and residents are asked to give any feedback to councillors or by means of the parish postbox beside the village notice-board.

There is a questionnaire for responses as to whether there is support for community social events.

Planning. An application to turn part of Hangar 2 on the Venture Park from a warehouse to offices was considered and no objections raised. AVDC has given consent for the erection of a large industrial building on the Venture Park to replace a number of smaller buildings in the Solids area.

Precept For 2007/8 has been set by the parish council exactly the same as for 2006/7 - 9,520, so residents will see little change in the parish element of their council tax for the coming year.

Next Meeting. At 7.30pm in the cricket pavilion on Tuesday February 26.

ST EDMUND'S CHURCH. Father Eric has had a break from all his Christmas duties by a visit to Rome and we look forward to his account of places which tourists perhaps do not find. He returns on January 28.

The meeting at 7.30pm on Tuesday February 12 at Long Crendon is open to all parishioners and anyone wishing to raise matters is advised to let Father know in good time for the item to be included on the agenda.

Parishioners visiting Our Lady of Light on Sunday February 3 are welcome to remain for pancakes after the 10am Mass in advance of Shrove Tuesday on February 5.

The Ash Wednesday Mass will be celebrated in St Edmund's at 7.30pm on Wednesday February 6. The defunct organ in Our Lady's has been removed and the space will eventually be dedicated as the Martyrs Chapel, dedicated to the Oxford Martyrs and Blessed Thomas Belson.

Father Boswell's ashes were interred in the Columbarium in Our Lady's in a short ceremony after Mass on Sunday January 20 which members of his family attended. His parishioners feel that he has come home.

COMMENTS RECEIVED by Cllr Evans from some residents as to the parish children at the possible expense of those of some other residents have been noted. I am asked to point out that any improvements to the play area will be at no expense to taxpayers.

Any resident is free to suggest to any councillor ways in which the village could be improved, by letter if preferred. The box on the latest newsletter could be used for such suggestions, as well as the one specified.

YOUR CORRESPONDENT has many 'hats' and her role in writing this column is separate from all of them. If you wish to raise matters concerning the village please make it clear in what capacity you wish her to act.

As a result of the successful film show last year, she would be prepared to organise other events or outings if there is sufficient interest, but this would be in a private capacity only. Suggestions welcomed.

VILLAGE FLOODS. On the evening of January 15 the whole village was under water from one end to the other and it was sad that the cricket pavilion was also affected after its major refurbishment at great expense. It is impossible to recall when heavy rain had so badly affected Westcott, and driving through the village after dark so dangerous.
