To reduce the number of beds in the Florence Nightingale Hospice would be a tragedy - my father spent the only comfortable days of his "health care" there in 2003 and I value the place and the staff extremely highly. Nothing was too much trouble for them, a stark contrast to the way he was ingored in the general wards of the hospital. The time he spent there gave my mum and the rest of the family a break from caring for him, whilst happy in the knowledge that he was being looked after in a loving environment. To look after a terminally ill patient is not only difficult for the carers, but also for the patient, who feels that he/she may be a burden on their family. Dad relaxed while he was at the hospice and I shall always be grateful for the help and kindness they offered. Please do not diminish this priceless resource. Any one of us could need care of this quality at some point in our futures.

I support pressure on minister to increase available services and appropreiate increase in funding.

A relative is a district nurse in the area. This is madness. Years of experience thrown away. How can the needs of patients in the home be monitored properly with district nurses only doing an initial assessment visit before passing on the care to relatively inexperienced and certainly less qualified staff? How can so few district nurses be expected to manage the workload that already places such demands on their teams?

A a patient at a local practice that is planning to close I am very concerned that health infrastructure is 'healthy' enough to cope with the vast increase in populaation proposed for thee next 15 years.

I have elderly parents both currently in care, but unfortunately not the same home, let alone the same area. Mum (82) is at Maids Moreton Hall & Dad(81) who needs nursing care (which is being funded) has been put into The Hillside Nursing Home, Aylesbury. There is a nursing home place available at a home 200 yds from where my mother is, he cannot go because funding means he most go where specified.

I feel sorry for the PCT having to manage all the initiatives and strategies it is given by a Government who hasn't a clue what it is like in the 'real' world.

We are constantly being told that services are being moved 'nearer to home' and that people will be treated in the community. If this is the case then it is nonsense to close beds in the local hospital, freeze District Nursing posts and cut back on all other services.

When will this Government wake up to reality and realise what it is really like 'down here on the ground'. I cannot believe that the PCT says that Buckingham Hospital is only used to a 60% capacity. This is because the hospital is too selective about the patients it will take.

How many people do you know who have been refused admission to Buckingham Hospital on some pretext or another? Respite used to be provided but that has all stopped. Vulnerable people are being forced to travel to High Wycombe, the other end of the county, for treatment, because Buckingham Hospital will not facilitate them. A & E services have been cut to 'normal working hours'.

You try taking a small child to A & E in Milton Keynes or Stoke Mandeville with another couple of toddlers in tow? The whole service is disgraceful and in my opinion, is being caused by short term thinking from people who do not listen to 'real' people.

Oh, no, I am sorry, I forgot, the problems in the Health Service are caused because people get sick, how silly of me. come on everyone, stay healthly and Vale of Aylesbury PCT will be able to stay within its budget!

We must keep funding for health visitors. They provide an invaluable service to the community. Young mums can't do without them.

Yet again the powers that be see fit to gamble with peoples lives. No wonder the generation who lived through the Second World War and rejoiced at the introduction of the National Health Service, feel so let down. My mother is in her eighties and receives exceptional care from the Wing community nurses. These nurses are now under threat of losing their jobs in the proposed cutbacks. Just another example of incompetant few playing with the health and wellbeing of the many!

Use some of the money that is given to almost any country that asks to improve health facilities in this country. North Bucks is facing a huge expansion in housing but there apears to be no corresponding expansion of health services, in fact it seems to be the opposite

Eric Minshull, Stowe View, Tingewick Buckingham

I am in full support of this campaign. Instead of cutting back these vital services they should be increasing the support that is so desperatly needed. Indeed how will Aylesbury Vale PCT cope in the years to come when considering all the new housing developments that are taking place?

We need the assurance that the health infrastructure WILL always be capable of coping with any increases in population for whatever reason.

Cuts in the Health Service, especially in the Hospice are unacceptable.

John Bush, High Street, Weedon

I deplore any cuts in the NHS.

Mrs S Bright, Kynaston Avenue, Stoke Mandeville

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It's funny how the Primary Care Trust can plead impoverishment and can plan cuts, while at the same time it - and the NHS in general - manage to waste thousands of pounds of public money.

When my son had to pay multiple visits to Stoke Mandeville hospital recently, the clinical care was excellent. However the levels of disorganisation and waste were abysmal. In particular I noticed a massive waste of energy, even in these times of dangerous global warming.

The lights were on everywhere I went in the hospital, even in rooms that were not being used, such as rest rooms and toilets.

In the parents' coffee room on the children's ward there was a large tank of water kept at boiling point day and night. It contained, I would estimate, about ten gallons of water, and although I was grateful for the cup of coffee I felt quite sick at the waste of energy and money. I also noticed that all cups and plates were "disposable" – more wasted money, when you could easily ask people to wash up when finished.

In the new canteen (which came, I suspect, with a hefty price tag) was a huge toasting grill which was kept permanently on, whether or not anyone was making toast – a sure recipe for guzzling electricity.

And then there is the slack use of human resources: despite many hours of waiting, we gained the impression that some of the staff milling around were not at all busy. No one seemed to be in control and there was a general air of nonchalance.

It seems to me that what is needed is better financial management – indeed, management of any description would be a start.

Y ours faithfully,

Rachel Beckett

I think the NHS is top heavy get rid of those who are pen pushers, and get more medical staff.

Mr.D.Rutland, Ridgeway Court,Aylesbury

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I find it amazing that such a short-sighted approach is being taken. Surely we should be campaigning for MORE funding rather that having to fight against cuts to an already financially-stressed health care system. With so many more residents coming into the Vale any cuts made now will make for a much more difficult scramble out of the black hole in the future. We are fortunate to have access to fantastic health care system in Britain - let's keep it that way.

I am appalled at the proposed 'savings' for health-care in Buckinghamshire and its effect on staffing at the hospice.

Two years ago my sister-in law spent two vital weeks at F.N.H. where she received faultless care. During that time, her family were able to rest easier, knowing that she was happy, reassured and receiving first class treatment. Indeed, our visits were a pleasure - lovely surroundings, a happy atmosphere and excellent staffing, treatment, and cleanliness.

That stay was invaluable to her and family alike. I believe it was crucial to her successful fight to see her third Grandchild born a few months later.

To take away the staffing levels and rob others of this wonderful service at such an emotional, traumatic and painful time is criminal.

Yours sincerely

I am very concerned about the situation with the Florence Nightingale Hospice. It is a vital resource for the terminally ill and their family and friends. I have had a neighbour and a dear friend and their families who all found great comfort in using this vital and scarce resource. I lost my brother to Cancer when he was only 33 and so know from a personal perspective the personal care and attention required for the terminally ill.

Please add my name to those of any action group opposing the current moves to change the Hospice

Yours faithfully

I was appalled when I read your article today, stating that beds are definately to be cut at Florence Nightingale House.

I have personal experience of the wonderful care given by the staff at the Hospice to patients during their final weeks and days of life.

My first husband was cared for by the Day Hospice and also for respite several times before his death there , with a brain tumour in April 2001.

Subsequently. my second husband was in the Hospice from 9th December 2005 until his passing on 23rd December 2005.

When you are terminally ill like they were, the appropriate place is not in a busy hospital ward where the nurses are overstretched, but in the calm, tranquil atmosphere of the hospice where the nurses have more time to spend with the patients and the relatives at such a stressful time.

Also, what about all the money thet the Friends of the Hospice raise every year to keep it going?

Obviosly I feel very strongly about this and maybe when the "Powers that Be" need this sort of care they will be grateful that it was allowed to continue.

Sheila Pearce, The Spiert, Stone

I lost my dear wife to cancer 12 weeks ago and I am appalled at the proposal to reduce the beds at the hospice.

Although Pam died at home she had been an in-patient in Florence Nightingale House for treatment. The care and attention which she received was superb. I shall always be grateful for that.

The loss of just one bed would be serious but to lose half of the beds would be an absolute tragedy. How anyone could consider denying terminally ill patients a little extra care and compassion for the last few weeks or days of their life is beyond belief.

Yours truly

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Surely in this day and age to axe hospice beds is wrong. My family have personally had a dying relative stay at the hospice and the support and help from the staff was out of this world. They were unable to save our relative but they really gave the best care and attention, which we would not have been able to provide at home. Thank you Florence Nightingale Hospice. We are behind you 100%.

My wife and I are happy to add our names to the petition, to be sent to Mrs. Patricia Hewitt expressing concern at the present and future levels of health care, especially as vaste growth in housing is planned for the district. Health is just one of many aspects of the seeming lack of thinking through the proposals.

Robert & Sheila Vickers, Langdon Avenue, Aylesbury

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Having worked for the health service in the community as a District Nurse I am appalled at the cut backs that are occurring at the present time.

Surely the demographics of our population would tell any one that the population are getting older, and yes, they may be getting fitter, but there will still be many older people that need nursing in their own homes.

If these cut backs occur many older people will go unrecognised by the services that are left. We are heading for a catastrophe of elderly people being left forgotten because the department of health are so busy changing their health agenda causing PCTs to get into so much financial deficit and not taking the time to REALLY see what is going on in communities.

I think it is very short sighted of the Department of Health to enforce such cut backs in services that are so needed by our local community.Would Patricia Hewitt like to be told that there was no palliative care service or District Nurse service to care for someone she loved and caredf for? I doubt it.

Agnes Fanning, King Edward Avenue, Aylesbury

I would like to register our support for the above as Ii feel the people of Bucks are losing out in many different areas of health care, perhaps if we were a Labour voteing area it would be different!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sir, I was appalled to learn of the planned cut in the number of beds available in the Hospice, for if there is a place which is indispensable for people with severe/terminal illnesses it is the Hospice. I cannot figure out how 12 beds can actually represent such a big hole in a budget which is so badly managed that the hole is already bottomless……..

The Hospice has been a God sent support to myself and my husband when he was still with us, I could not have kept him here until almost the end without the respites the Hospice gave me. I know of many others in the same case.

I was operated for cancer (just two years after my husband death), in December last and, should I, or my family, need help in the future, I would be greatly comforted to know that we can call on the Hospice in an emergency, simply to know that it is there is a comfort and the services which are provided are so pitiful that those of us who have been or are likely to be in need – let's face it most of us at some point or other – can do with all the help still available.

Thank you for your battle to keep the Hospice open and functioning fully.

Please see below a letter dictated to me from my mum and dad to stress the importance of the COPD clinic, and in their words "if it wasn't for Chris Finegan and her COPD expertise, mum would be dead".

My COPD went from bad to very bad in a short space of time. Before the COPD services were set up I was under the care of my family doctor. In the earlier days, and not understanding the disease fully, my husband would call the doctor out to see me in the hope he would make me better.

The doctor would only visit by appointment, and always in a hurry expect me to explain my symptoms in 10 minutes. When you struggle for every breath you take, talking quickly is a luxury that you no longer have. My husband would have to take over and talk for me, and even he would not be able to make the doctor see all the symptoms.

Ten minutes is just not enough, and generally the doctors are not fully aware that the slightest of symptoms can rapidly lead to disastrous results. Pills and advice is all that was ever offered.

The turning point was a time when Eddie (my husband) called the doctor out (a different one), and on her arrival, she immediately got an ambulance and I was off to A & E, my "minor" symptoms" that had been treated with useless pills and advice, and had accelerated to a state where I was unconscious and cannot recall the episode.

Fortunately at this point in time I came under the care of Chris Finegan who visited me in hospital and gave me hope.

During the time that she has cared for me, I have gone from sleeping on my sofa to having a mobility bed with a thick mattress and an inflatable mattress laid on top. I also have a commode as I can no longer do the walk to the bathroom – in fact she organised all these things for me with a phone call, and these items were delivered to me in 2 days!

S ince being in her care, I have received numerous aids to help me in my life. I have boots to go on my feet to prevent sores, cushions, walking sticks and frames, and literature to help us all understand COPD. She helped us to obtain a nebulisor in the early days, which I have since upgraded again simply due to Chris lending me another that is more efficient for my needs now.We understand now that with COPD your health fluctuates.

W hen it's bad you end up in hospital very close to death, and when it's good, you just survive.

I need you to understand that if it were not for Chris, I would not be here.

The vital things that Chris provides you cannot quantify.

Her visits are very frequent, and on each visit she measures my oxygen levels and not only that, she will instantly notice any changes in me, whether it be my mood, my colouring, or any other differences that are apparent since the last visit. By being so "on the ball" she is able to tell if my medication needs altering / juggling to compensate for any infections that may be brewing. She has provided my husband with an emergency kit of instructions and pills if I were to contract an infection and not able to contact her. Eddie has had to implement the emergency pack, and again if it were not for this – I would be dead due to a simple urine infection. Everything that she does can never be done by the doctor. I am due to go to Florence Nightingale Hospice again this month for a week for respite care. I went back in May, and even though I was very apprehensive, it turned out to be the best thing that I have done and achieved in a very long while – and my husband got a well-earned rest. Christine went out of her way to arrange this for me – she arranged the transport too, which was crucial, as I needed to be in a wheelchair and have my constant supply of oxygen.

I beg that all of this should continue.

Living with COPD is miserable for me, and miserable for my husband who is now my full time carer. You never think that it will happen to you. It is a fact that since Chris has been caring for me, I am alive today.

Yours truly,

Jean and Eddie Hedges

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have just come back from spending a few hours with my mum at Florence - mum is there for a weeks respite care. If you have not had anyone who has used the services of the Hospice - you wont understand. A lot has been written about the day centre - which is also excellent, but not a lot has been written about the people who are there for longer periods.

In our case, my mother has been unwell for the past 12 months - she has COPD which will eventually kill her. The disease is of the lungs and mum is on oxygen all the time. My dad is now her full time carer at home. He sorts out her drugs, helps her to the loo and does all of the household chores. He too is unwell and looking after mum takes it out of him. The respite care that they are receiving is a huge huge benefit.

Dad gets to have the "week off" and do things that he cannot do while mum is at home - little things like taking the dog for a walk and not worrying about leaving mum. Mum too has a break from all of us fussing over her. The staff are great. This is the second time that mum has spent a week there, and most of the staff are the same people that mum met the first time round. Everyone has made a fuss of her saying how pleased they are to see her again - this is something that just wouldn't happen on a ward - but means a great deal to the patient. The staff genuinely care for the patients there. All are caring, sympathetic and professional without being patronising. The food that is served to the patients is excellent - fresh and healthy.

When my mum buzzes for help - whether it is to use the commode, or help to get dressed, the staff are at her bed within minutes. To close this facility would be terrible for the patient and the people who care for them at home. My mum also receives excellent care from the services of Chris Finegan at the COPD clinic. This too is facing cuts. I have attached two letters that we have sent to Gail Tucker to try and make the people concerned aware of what a difference Chris and the COPD services make to mums life. Without the services of the COPD clinic (as you will see from the attached letter) - mum wouldn't be here. Without the services of Florence Nightingale - mum wouldn't be here. You cannot quantify what both of these services have done for my mum. These services just can't close .

Kind regards

Kim Crook

Health care is a vital element of our infrastructure. At a time when the Government is forcing Aylesbury Vale to take additional growth above and beyond our natural growth, that same Government should be looking to increase healthcare facilities in our District, not cutting back on existing services. It is vital that we have the necessary infrastructure in place to support the growth we have been allocated over the next 20 to 30 years. Once again the message has to go back to the Government that, without Government commitment to provision of the necessary infrastructure, we cannot take the additional growth they want us to take.

Cllr Carole Paternoster, Aylesbury Vale District Council

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am shocked and disgusted with the cuts that are being made to the NHS services in Aylesbury Vale. And the lack of information given to the public who pay and rely on many of these services.

T oday my wife took out 12-week-old son to have his injections. When they arrived they were informed that the surgery no longer had a health visitor as she was told her service was to be cut from that surgery with immediate affect.

We were given no notice of this and it appears nor was the surgery.

We have a good relationship with our health cisitor and she has supported us with both our children. We trust her advice and rely on her support. We no longer know where to go to ask questions about bringing up our children, any health problems or any other things the health cisitor is involved with. One must also not forget the role they play in preventing child abuse!

Where do we go to get out baby weighed and checked over? We now have to choose a surgery in the area and see any health visitor who has space!

Suerly this is unacceptable as the number of children born each year is not reducing!

Firstly I congratulate and wholeheartedly support your headlining and awareness campaign regarding this negligent reduction in Goverment support for the Hospice.

It is a proven statistic that one in three people in the UK today will suffer cancer of one form or another during their lifetimes many of these will need the invaluable services of the hospice service as my mother did several years ago. To many it is a priceless support network which gives many the ability to go on with life in the only way possible.

With the huge growth in Aylesbury's population over the next 20 years how on earth can cutbacks in this service be contemplated let alone justified? Surely simple logic suggests that investment in the service to the same level as growth in the population is what is required - not reduction!!!! I think this decision is invalid, negligent and above all a very sad reflection on the state of government today.

Keep up the good work!

Thank you very much for the sensitively written article by Marianne Shaw, describing the very caring and much needed day hospice.

As a local GP with a special interest in end-of-life care, I know it has provided much needed support for many patients over the years.

I, therefore, was dismayed to read the inaccurate information in Section 1, page 7 of the same edition, from Lynda Lake-Stewart, acting chief executive of the Vale of Aylesbury Primary Care Trust.

When asked to clarify the fact that the number of beds at Florence Nightingale House could be reduced by half, as revealed by The Bucks Herald two weeks ago, she was quoted as saying: "Average bed occupancy rates were 64 per cent in May and 54 per cent in June."

Florence Nightingale House has 11 inpatient beds. The actual bed occupancy for April this year was in fact 73 per cent, May 74 per cent, June 68 per cent and July 72 per cent. This was in spite of significant staff shortage due to long-term sick leave among the nursing staff and the freeze on recruitment. In order to provide a flexible service, it would be impossible to manage the hospice at 100 per cent bed occupancy and still provide a compassionate, caring and quality service.

I read with sheer alarm the article on the front page of the Bucks Herald, 23 August issue at the suggested proposals to cuts to Healthcare services in the Vale of Aylesbury. I have particular personal concern over the cuts in the Community Nursing services, my mother received wonderful care from the District Nurses.

I felt they went above and beyond their contracted hours and at great cost to their own family lives. I know because I developed a rapport with all the team. Please tell me how Patricia Hewitt can justify an increase in Community Services when local PCT proposals recommend a fragmented service, because if you take away community staff, how can I be reassured my father will receive the same service should the time come that he requires care?

I am appalled to learn that the Primary Care Trust is considering the closure of six beds at Florence Nightingale House (FNH) plus a reduction in communal nursing posts.

Where are the terminally ill patients to receive the care they urgently need?

My husband died in January and we were fortunate to have marvellous care from community nurses at home followed by two weeks in FNH where nothing was too much trouble and the staff were wonderfully caring. The whole atmosphere there was tranquil and he was completely at peace. The family were treated with respect and apart from being at home we could not have worked for a better place for his final days.

There has always been tremendous support from the general public for FNH which will continue in the future with fundraising and volunteering to maintain the excellent facilities to its full capacity.

With the proposed huge increase in housing for the area the PCT should be identifying the need for more beds. Closure at this time will place an intolerable burden on staff, patients and families and other ways of making savings should be explored as a matter of urgency.

Dear Ms Hewitt

In the midst of cuts to the hospice service and services to the elderly, it might seem strange to be worrying about the diminishing numbers of Health Visitors and School Nurses. It appears to be a soft option, but have you forgotten Victoria Climbie and the Lamming Report?

The effects of the proposed cuts will render the Health Visitor Service ineffective to deliver its key role in Child Protection and its role of early intervention and prevention.

The Lamming report showed how easy it was for a child to slip through the net, with tragic results. Everyone declared that it must never happen again.

The government set up the excellent programme " Every Child Matters",

with the aims " Be healthy , Stay Safe, Enjoy and achieve, Make a positive contribution and Enjoy Economic Well-being. It sets great store on prevention and early intervention; professionals working together and sharing information The Health Visitors are ideally placed, at the very beginning of the child's life, to observe, record and support the family in a positive and non- threatening way. They are trusted and approachable

In the recent past the Health Visitor would visit every baby 3 times. On those visits, she would look at the baby and comment on his progress, suggest stratagems for coping and reassure the mother. They also ran courses which helped young mothers gain self confidence, which builds capacity in the community. The Health Visitor was not only valuable to the first time mother, but, because she saw EVERY mother and baby, she had a sound knowledge based experience of recognising when things were going wrong and could alert other services. She was not fooled by middle class parents, who were hiding abuse under a well organised life style

The School Nurses are another disappearing service, which should be contributing to the effective delivery of the 5 outcomes of Every Child Matters. They can deliver health and sex education far more effectively than teachers. They also provide another trusted and approachable person to whom children with problems can talk confidentially. Because of this, they are key in preventing child abuse, to say nothing of obesity.

Please find these valuable and valued services to continue for the benefit of the children and the whole community.

Bear in mind, that you are supposed to be delivering a "Health Service" and early diagnosis reduces the spend later on.

Building a fence at the top of the cliff will reduce the need for the ambulance at the foot of the cliff!

Yours Sincerely

Cllr Chloe Willetts

We write in support of Meadowcroft Surgery's statement published in last week's Bucks Herald. As GPs we are dismayed at PCT proposals to dismantle the community nursing and health visitor teams and the significant cutbacks to essential services such as the hospice, speech and language therapy, chiropody and the complete loss of the linkworker service which has been invaluable in helping patients who do not speak English to access healthcare.

The proposed reduction in district nursing services will seriously compromise our ability to care for patients in their own homes. This proposal is counter to the government's expressed wishes in the 2006 White Paper - Your Health, Your Care, Your Say.

We welcome the Bucks Herald's efforts to inform the public of these proposals so that we all will have an opportunity to express our objections.

As a service user, I am alarmed at the cuts to all services, which will have a disastrous effect on those in the community that are dependant on theses sevices it is criminal.

With current services acting as a preventative in supporting the vulnerable to stay in the community, it will mean we will become a drain and will need hospital/nursing home intervention, which will cost more long term.

With the planned growth and new houses how will we survive without basic services. This has not been thought through, if the consultation process had been followed, all of these points would have been flagged up and cuts would have been made in the right places. Management with a high salary that have no concept of how essential these services are and how much money they save if you look at the bigger picture.

We have already suffered unacceptable cutbacks. I cannot find a national health dentist for me or my children and we are now told that my 11 year old son will not receive the orthodontic treatment he needs unless we as his parents can afford the estimated 2,000 to pay privately. We can't. Both I and his father have worked thorughout our adultlife paying tax and national insurance contributions. What national health service?

After reading about the closing of half of Florence Nightingale House (FNH) I feel I must say something.

I am a carer for my terminally ill wife and for the last five years without FNH I do not know how I would have coped.

Last week my wife was taken very ill and had to be taken to A and E at Stoke Mandeville Hospital only to be told after seven hours that there were no beds and she would have to be taken to Wycombe Hospital. My wife is now in the last stages of her illness and now needs lots of care from places like FNH - all I hope is that the so-called suit brigade will need a place like FNH, maybe then they will know the things that carers and ill people go through.

The Bucks Herald of August 2 headlined the proposed Aylesbury Vale PCT health service cuts with the emphasis on Florence Nightingale House.

The aspect that caught my eye though, seeming unbelievably badly thought out, was the suggestion that community nursing and the Out of Hours service should also be attacked.

These services are relatively low cost, effective and customer friendly, surely what the PCT should be pursuing in the present climate.

They enable patients to be treated outside the high cost hospital environment without blocking beds and incurring the huge overhead costs associated with treatment in a central facility.

They also avoid many calls on the ambulance services and A and E. Drawing an inference from reports on Stoke Mandeville hygiene in the same issue of The Bucks Herald they also significantly reduce the risks of cross-infection.

Population demographics indicate there will be a rapidly increasing demand in this area if an ageing population is to be treated economically. Any commercial organisation would jump at such an option to meet customer demand but the PCT doesn't seem to see it that way, even though the Health Secretary has indicated that strengthening care outside central facilities is seen as a way to improve NHS performmance.

I speak from personal experience, In 2004 I was seriously ill, as was my wife in early 2005. Thankfully we are both now fully recovered. During that time the vast majority of care was carried out in our home by a dedicated group of district nurses, and from time to time the Out of Hours service. If this had not been available, a lengthy stay in hospital would have been required at a cost which would have been an order of magnitude greater than the outcome in practice.

Historically, I have never been a supporter of NHS privatisation but it is proposals of this type which make me think that private organisations, centrally funded from general taxation, are probably the only way forward for our national healthcare.

Does anybody believe that a commercially run organisation, paid to provide quality healthcare for us all on a per capita basis, would act in this way?

I implore the PCT to consider overall strategy and think again abou this ill-conceived proposal.

My husband and I have to agree with Derek (see letter), my mother passed away in September 2005 at FNH after spending her last 5 days there. Nothing was too much trouble for them, the nurses are angels on earth, and my family and I are aware how lucky she was to get a bed there. To think they have proposed to cut the amount of beds from 12 to 6 is preposterous to say the least.

The emphasis should be on increasing the bed number as there are still a large amount of people in the Vale that require their care but are unable to receive it when it's needed most.

As a family we have raised money to assist the hospice at my mother's wake, and more recently, my husband and I opted for donations instead of gifts or a honeymoon at our wedding. We don't regret raising the money, but it saddens and infuriates us that as well as paying taxes so that we can receive a (so-called) decent NHS service, it is obviously doesn't make a difference how we try to help, the cuts could be made regardless.

Perhaps the authority would be better placed looking at the management pay and expenses and cutting back on those? With the national disgrace of Stoke Mandeville's lack of care and basic hygiene in the light of the C.diff outbreak, we would think that cutbacks would be the last thing the health authority needs to do...

And as for Derek's comment about the suit brigade requiring the help of a place like FNH, it's obvious that on their income they would be able to afford private care anyway and would never have to enjoy the service we, the average public, receive from them today.

It amazes us that we in the UK tolerate this mis-management of our monies and services in this way. Trust me, if this was anywhere else in Europe the public would be rioting.

After reading your article re proposed cuts by Aylesbury Primary Care Trust I realised what a remarkable country we must live in.

We are able to fund care services, education, homes, plus cash from our taxed income to hijackers, murderers, rapists, paedophiles and illegal immigrants at an insatiable rate, yet as country we are not able to offer our own citizens the right to die with dignity in a loving and caring environment. Over the last eight years taxes have risen remorselessly but services to the community have not, indeed each year they get worse.

What, and for whose benefit do we pay our taxes?

Perhaps Mr Blair could start the ball rolling by cancelling his order for Blair 1 and 2 and reduce bureaucracy and wastage by at least 50per cent. This would, at least, be a starting point.

Makes one proud to be British.
