Slideshow: Canon Bennett retires after 20 years in villages
Canon Alan Bennett is retiring after 20 years serving the communities of Aston Clinton, Buckland and Drayton Beauchamp.
Canon Bennett took his final service at St Michael and All Angels, Aston Clinton on Sunday night after joining the parish in the February of 1987.
The evening communion service was immediately followed by a celebration of the time Canon Bennett has spent in the community, with wine, refreshments and a jazz band.
He was also presented with a collage of photographs depicting his time in the community, as well as a cheque of donations that reflects the contribution he has made to the area.
Canon Bennett plans to enjoy his retirement in Spain where he plans to keep active by walking, cycling and entertaining friends.
He has fond memories of his years in Aston Clinton with Buckland and Drayton Beauchamp and credits this to the members of the community that work hard to keep the churches running smoothly and the non-spectacular but important festivals that keep village life revolving around the church. Canon Bennett commented how he prefers the modern flexibility of church life and feels Christians in the community play an important role. "Those who are retired are the backbone of the church, they have the energy and interest to contribute to the Christian community and fulfil the supporting roles within the church," he said.
Marion Richards, the church warden, said that although everyone will miss Canon Bennett and his active and supportive role in the village they will cherish all their happy memories and wish him well with his retirement in Spain.
