Pitstone and Ivinghoe, October 10
SPONSORED WALK AND CYCLE RIDE. Last month's Historic Churches Trust sponsored 'ride and stride' was well supported, and two reports have appeared in this month's Parish News magazine.
As usual, Tracey, Mary and Izzie got stuck into the walking, although Tracey was mislaid before the trio even got started. The wayward Vicar was finally tracked down at Pitstone Church.
The trio then made it as far as New Street Baptist Church, where they succumbed to a second breakfast before signing in at another four churches in Tring (part of the fun is to visit as many local churches as possible on your route).
They then proceeded down Miswell Lane and along the Wendover Arm of the Grand Union Canal to St Mary's in Drayton Beauchamp, under the new bypass and across a very large field to All Saints, Buckland, before finishing up at St Michael's in Aston Clinton, where preparations for a wedding were in full swing.
Meanwhile, the Grimmette family set off from St Mary's Church, Ivinghoe with Pitstone at 10 am and cycled to Marsworth before visiting all the churches in Tring (the record does not show whether they too indulged in a second breakfast), then Berkhamsted, before returning via Aldbury - a round trip of over 25 miles, punctuated by steep hills that forced Mum to resort to foot power and three punctures - two to Oliver's bike and one to Alice's. All the participants will now be looking forward to receiving their sponsorship money.
BROOKMEAD SCIENCE DAY. Brookmead School held its Science Day on Thursday September 27 when all classes from Foundation to Year 6 enjoyed a wide variety of science experiments and investigations. "The kids had a really fun time - the enthusiasm and excitement within the classes was amazing as I went round," said science co-ordinator Jessica Avery.
The day finished with an assembly where each class shared what they had been doing with the rest of the school, with parents also invited to see their children receive prizes for a family challenge, which everyone had the opportunity to take part in. The challenge was to design a creature and explain how it ate, moved and adapted to its environment.
Jessica Avery organised the day to promote the message that 'science is fun' to the children and get their learning in this important subject off to an enthusiastic start in the new academic year., and she thanked everyone who helped make the day a success.
ALTERNATIVE HALLOWE'EN. This year's Alternative Hallowe'en Party - one which doesn't celebrate the dark side of Hallowe'en - will be held from 5pm to 7pm in Brookmead School hall. The party will include scary but light stories, craft, games and food. To find out more, contact Jo on 01296 662781 or Tracey on 01296 668260.
PIANIST WANTED. St Mary's Church, Ivinghoe with Pitstone, is looking for a pianist to accompany the choir's singing and practices. The choir are a lively, friendly bunch who sing all sorts of music - not just hymns. Practices are on Thursdays from 7.30pm to 9pm. For more details, contact Tracey on 01296 668260.
