Pitstone & Ivinghoe, January 9
THANKS. Vicar Tracey Doyle has thanked all those adults - especially Jo Steers and Julie Leonard - who helped make the recent Advent workshop such fun for the children.
She has also thanked all who helped with the free Christmas dinner for senior citizens on Friday December 7, and Ivinghoe Entertainments, The Knyghton Charity and Towns Land Charity for their generous donations to the event.
"I know everyone enjoyed the dinner and many a tear fell when the children's choir of Brookmead sang their carols."
ROYAL BRITISH LEGION. Ivinghoe and Pitstone Branch of the Royal British Legion's contribution to the 2007 Poppy Appeal has exceeded 5,000 after a quiz night at The Bell pub in Pitstone raised 255 to add to the coffers.
The quiz had been organised by Ian and Clare of The Bell and the quizmaster was Colin Holland, who produced an interesting programme of questions. The winning team was led by Mike Morris.
Local Poppy Appeal Organiser Owen Wynne thanked Ian and Clare for their support and also expressed his appreciation to those who made the house-to-house collection, Joe Marling for his collection outside Mason's Store, those who donated to the appeal and everyone who helped in any way.
COFFEE MORNING. Stella Heley hosts a Children's Society coffee morning on Thursday January 17 in her Great Gap home. There will be a bring-and-buy with home-made flans and cakes and a raffle. "If you are a box holder, stagger in with your heavy boxes and I will empty them later," said Stella. All are welcome.
CHURCH COURSES. St Mary's Church, Ivinghoe with Pitstone, starts its House Group Bible Study, Lent Course and Emmaus 2 Course in February. Anyone interested should contact Tracey Doyle on 01296 668260.
SCOUTING EVENTS. Pitstone Memorial Hall recently hosted two important district scouting events. Over 100 Beavers from all over the district attended a Christmas Party, enjoying games, food and activities as well as entertainment by Colonel Custard. Earlier, Cubs from ten packs from across the Vale of Aylesbury had taken part in the annual district Handicraft Day, with each cub having the opportunity to try up to 33 different craft activities.
Everyone went home with a big bag of items they had made and there was a special centenary cake.
Meanwhile, two cubs from the 1st Ivinghoe and Pitstone Scout Group have earned the Chief Scouts Silver Award, the highest award that can be gained by a cub scout.
To qualify for the award, the cub must complete a series of six challenges: Promise Creative, Community, Fitness, Global and Outdoor. Each challenge consists of a number of stages involving finding out about or taking part in new activities or learning new skills. One of the award-winners took part in the ringing of the bells at St Mary's Church, Ivinghoe with Pitstone, to celebrate the Queen and Prince Philip's diamond wedding anniversary and then wrote to tell them about it and received a reply from Buckingham Palace.
The other cub took part in football training for the first time and liked it so much that he joined a local club.
GIRLGUIDING UK TREFOIL GUILD. Girlguiding UK's Wing District, which covers Ivinghoe, Pitstone, Cheddington, Wing, Wingrove and surrounding areas, is considering forming a Trefoil Guild. The guild would be open to all women aged 18 or over who have made their Girlguiding promise as either a Rainbow, Brownie, Guide, Ranger or Guider.
Active members are welcome, but so are those who are not currently active in Girlguiding. Anyone who would be interested in the formation of a Wing District Trefoil Guild should contact Lucy on 01525 374954 to find out more and register their interest.
