Haddenham, October 3
CHARITY AND FUNDRAISING NEWS. A number of people have notified fundraising successes of the past few weeks to me.
If you forgot to let me know about yours please contact me for inclusion in a future column.
Auction of Promises. The event held on July 21 in the Manor Farm tithe barn to raise funds for St Mary's Church Refurbishment Fund (the Millennium Project Phase 2), realised a total of 4,700.
The evening began with pink champagne and canaps and the 70 or so people who attended brought along their own picnic supper. The 100 auction lots ranged from handmade soap, meat pies, home-made cakes and bread and hand-knitted socks to holidays abroad, an exercise bike and a limited edition football from the opening of Wembley Stadium.
The organisers thank village businesses and parishioners for their generous contributions, auctioneer William Abbott, who donated his professional services, and Tom Bucknell and the Banister and Hollick families for allowing the use of their barn and for all their help with the event.
Third World Link. Haddenham Third World Link held three fundraising events during the school summer holidays in aid of the Third World Projects they support. A treasure hunt on July 29 saw 11 families/groups walking about two miles as they followed clues around the village and answered a sheet of questions.
The joint winners, with 32 correct answers out of 35, were: the Fleming family (who won a hamper of Fairtrade goods, after their name was drawn from a hat) and the Pritchard family. Grateful thanks go to the Rose and Thistle landlords, Dawn and Geoff, who allowed the use of the pub garden as a base. The 59 raised was made up to 100 with a generous donation.
Many people relaxed in the sun in the lovely Manor Farm gardens on August 17, thanks to Lizzie and David Banister, and enjoyed cream teas and home-made cakes served by helpers wearing frilly pinnies and caps. The event raised 267. In addition, the group sold cakes and gifts at Age Concern's Friday Coffee Stop on August's 5th Friday.
Bazaar. The Red Cross Day Centre's late summer bazaar on September 5 - with cakes, crafts, jumble and refreshments - raised 415.
Book Sale. Another successful sale of second-hand books and coffee morning was hosted by Brian and Zoe Bowman on September 8 and raised 614 for Multiple Sclerosis and local charities.
Cream Teas. Many took advantage of a lovely afternoon on September 9 to enjoy an outdoor cream tea with home-made cakes at St Mary's Centre. The organisers thank all who supported the event which raised 200 for Utugi (the Kenyan street children project).
Horse Fun Day. The organisers of the 4th Haddenham Fun Horse Show - held this year at a new venue (Church Farm, Aston Rd) – report that they had another fantastic day with 136 entries and lots of fun. They are grateful to their sponsors/advertisers/raffle donors and to everyone else for all their help and support, which enabled them to raise 1,000 for the Thames Valley and Chiltern Air Ambulance Trust. As none of the winners were from Haddenham, lack of space precludes me from publishing the list of winners but photos of the event can be found at www.photohello.co.uk
