Be a responsible dog owner
Did you get a dog for Christmas? Or maybe you're thinking about getting one.
Either way, there are a number of things you need to do as a new dog owner.
If you don't yet have your dog, have you considered getting an older dog from a rescue centre?
Matched with the right owner, rescue dogs can be just as rewarding as younger dogs. There are details about adopting pets on the RSPCA website: rspca.org.uk
One of the first things you need to do is register your new friend with a vet.
Like babies, puppies need a range of injections to make sure they stay healthy. You may want to think about neutering your pet.
As well as preventing unwanted pregnancies in bitches, dogs are often better behaved when neutered. Once your dog is old enough to go walkies, it must wear a collar and identity tag when it's out in public.
Some dogs are very clever at escaping so it's advisable that they wear a collar at all times. Even then, some dogs can lose them, so it's a good idea to microchip your pet.
This is a simple procedure undertaken by your vet and it means that you can always be reunited with your dog if it gets lost.
If you do lose your dog, or you find a lost dog, phone Aylesbury Vale District Council's dog warden on 01296 585200.
If it's outside of normal office hours, contact the police on 08458 505 505. From April 2008, the council will deal with all calls about strays on 01296 585605.
