Airport plans which could have obliterated the Vale
A film documenting the fight against plans to build a huge airport in the Vale has been shortlisted for an international award.
Over Our Dead Bodies tells of the 1969-71 campaign against 'London's Third Airport', a scheme which would have meant the destruction of Cublington, Stewkley and Dunton, while hundreds of families would have been evicted from their homes.
Nearby villages and Aylesbury would also have changed beyond recognition.
The film has now been nominated in the 'home video format' category of an awards ceremony celebrating the best of the archive industry.
John Flewin, who created the DVD using footage from three local filmmakers and the BBC, said: "It was the first big campaign for the environment and caught people's imaginations."
Action included a rally of 12,000 people on the airport site and the lighting of hilltop bonfires. Research was conducted which showed that 202 of 362 people in Drayton Parslow were inter-related by birth or marriage – highlighting the heartache forced evictions would cause in the countryside.
The DVD also tells how villagers were briefed on arming themselves and making petrol bombs, should the airport get the green light.
But the plans were eventually dropped in favour of regional airports.
