Ex Aylesbury mayor sorry for Luton jibe

A former mayor of Aylesbury sparked a diplomatic incident with Luton after saying that the Bedfordshire town made her feel 'uneasy'.

Cllr Jenny Puddefoot was speaking about the mayor's valuable chain of office at a town council meeting when she said: "The only time I have ever felt uneasy (wearing it) was when I went to Luton."

But her comments provoked a storm over the border.

Angry Luton Mayor Tom Shaw said: "Yet again, just as Luton's starting to look up you've got someone from outside the town trying to knock us down.

"If she doesn't feel safe she can come over here and I'll show her around the town personally."

Cllr Puddefoot has apologised for the gaffe, admitting she had kicked herself the moment she had mentioned the town's name.

She added: "I've visited Luton twice and I've been very impressed with it."
