Engineers battling to free traffic from roadworks gridlock
TRANSPORT chiefs this week hailed a breakthrough in tackling Aylesbury town centre's gridlock misery.
Three weeks ago, Bucks County Council was slammed after long tailbacks around the Horse and Jockey junction caused hours of misery for drivers.
Roadworks on Elmhurst Road - which are set to last until April - saw motorists hit out after crippling delays hampered their journeys.
But this week drivers have reported that traffic has been far lighter and journey times greatly decreased since the work started earlier this month.
A spokesman from County Hall told the Bucks Herald that officers have been out in force since the roadworks began trying to find ways of cutting the frustrating delays.
And traffic lights at the controversial junction have been resequenced to prevent bottlenecks developing.
The spokesman said: "Engineers have been making changes to the signal settings to improve traffic flows.
"We will continue to make changes to signal phasing as it's needed.
"We've also been listening to residents and we've put signs up to help motorists find alternative routes.
"We're pretty sure that drivers from further afield have now found alternative routes while the work is being carried out.
"It has to be said as well that traffic flow at that junction will have been significantly affected by the snow."
