Date set for reopening of Brill Windmill

The month of July will mark a truly memorable moment in time, with the official opening of the newly restored Brill Windmill.

Works have been under way since December 2008 to repair and restore this ancient windmill to its former glory.

Future visitors will be able to see the windmill standing out across the skyline, and repaired to how it looked when last in operation in 1923. From the end of July, public tours will allow visitors to see a close quarters the restored mill and to get a much better understanding of how the mill functioned.

Liz Judd, the Brill Windmill Management Group's representative for Brill Parish Council, said: "The scale of the restoration (together with the research, attention to historic detail and craftsmanship) has all been made possible thanks to the generosity and commitment of our funders. These funds have enabled us to ensure that Brill Windmill will retain its status as a building of national and historical importance. The windmill now stands proudly on Brill Common like the authentic, working mill of yesteryear, only better preserved, more secure and well cared for, with all the surviving historic detail intact. Now that the restoration programme is complete, the common land immediately surrounding the windmill will again be accessible to the public. However, there will be times when essential maintenance will need to be undertaken, to ensure that the restoration works stand the test of time, and we will continue to keep the local community informed. Brill Parish Council would like to thank the Project Manager Mark Bailey of Buckinghamshire County Council, Consultants Richard Oxley and Luke Bonwick, all those craftsmen at IJP who have worked on the project, the Brill Society, especially Jan Molyneux, and everyone involved for their hard work and dedication. It is wonderful to see Brill Windmill restored at last – the results have been well worth the wait.

The windmill will reopen on July 9
