A male nurse who filmed himself raping two female patients while they were unconscious inside the accident and emergency department of a hospital has been jailed for 18 years.

Andrew Hutchinson, aged 29, of Garford, near Abingdon, admitted a series of sexual offences that took place during a two-year period at John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, which is used by a lot of people across the region.

One teenage victim was raped in 2011 and another woman was raped in 2012. Hutchinson also admitted a charge of voyeurism relating to a patient in 2012 and one count of outraging public decency involving an unknown patient in 2012.

He was arrested by Thames Valley Police in November 2013 when he was caught secretly filming women and girls at the White Horse Leisure Centre in Abingdon, Oxfordshire.

Detectives then searched his home and found the footage of the sex offender raping the female patients as well as a large amount of child porn and other footage he had made on his mobile phone, computer equipment, a memory stick and a camera.

He also admitted to abusing two victims when he worked as a volunteer in the medical tent at a music festival.

At the time of his arrest, Hutchinson was employed as a staff nurse at the Emergency Departments of the John Radcliffe Hospital. Since his arrest he has not worked for and is no longer an employee of Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust.

The victims in the images of sex offences had been unaware that offences were committed against them because they were unconscious at the time the offence took place.

The victims of the voyeurism offences, apart from those who had made reports to police, had been unaware that they were being recorded or filmed.

All identifiable victims of Hutchinson have now been contacted by Thames Valley Police to be informed of the offences which took place against them and receive appropriate support.

Leading Operation Bream, Senior Investigating Officer, Det Ch Insp Mark Johns of Thames Valley Police CID said Hutchinson had committed a “string of depraved offences”.

He said: “I have no doubt that Hutchinson would have continued to offend had he not been arrested so I am delighted that this prolific offender will now be behind bars for a significant period of his life.

“This has been a particularly complicated, unusual and sensitive case as the victims of his sex offences were not aware that offences took place because they were not conscious. Thames Valley Police sent specially trained officers to personally speak to all the victims.

“I would like to thank the victims for the great courage and dignity they have shown during our investigation. I cannot imagine the distress they have been through since we had to inform them they were a victim in this complex investigation. I hope the victims feel some sense of justice now Hutchinson has been convicted and sentenced.”
